Innovative Spinal Decompression Therapy Malaysia

What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal decompression therapy is a chiropractic treatment that uses an advanced computer-controlled traction system, designed to help with chronic back pain and promote spinal healing. This method is non-surgical. For years, the idea of spinal traction has been gaining recognition from skilled chiropractors and other health professionals, offering  a second opinion and a chance to explore alternative treatments before resorting to surgery.

Essentially, this system gently stretches the spine, targeting the spinal discs that are often affected by wear and tear, injury, or degenerative conditions. It alleviates the pressure exerted by gravity and surrounding soft tissues, allowing for greater spinal separation and expansion of the intervertebral discs.

The gentle stretching creates a repetitive cycle of pulling and relaxing, which produces a “pumping effect.” This effect draws vital nutrients, oxygen, and blood flow into the disc, while simultaneously flushing out waste products and toxins that may have accumulated in the area.

With negative pressure within the discs, hydration levels are improved, which helps relieve pressure on the nerve roots by reducing the force applied to the vertebral pulp. The outcome of which is reduced back pain, increased mobility and healing of the spinal disc. Over time, the spinal disc becomes thicker, stronger, and more resilient, allowing it to better absorb the daily stresses placed on the spine.

Patients often experience relief from symptoms associated with conditions like:

  • herniated discs;
  • sciatica, and;
  • degenerative disc disease.

What is the Impact of Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Research indicates that spinal decompression therapy can be beneficial in decreasing pain and enhancing function in individuals with slipped disc and disc degeneration.

This specific study involved 30 patients (9 males, 21 females) that complained of chronic lumbar pain and radiating symptoms. Participants were divided into two groups: one receiving spinal decompression therapy and the other receiving general traction therapy, undergoing treatment on a regular basis for four weeks.

The study highlights the effectiveness of spinal decompression therapy in managing chronic lumbar pain and disc degeneration. After four weeks of treatment, both groups experienced significant improvements in pain levels, disability, and nerve tension. The differences are minimal since both treatments followed the same principles of relaxing the affected area of the spine suggesting that spinal decompression therapy offers comparable results to traditional traction methods, while providing targeted relief through its specialized approach.

Another study specifically investigated the effectiveness of motorized spinal decompression therapy with a higher sample size (56 people). Results showed lower back pain and leg pain intensity after the treatment. It also showed that decompression therapy significantly reduced size of the herniated disc, as observed during MRI examination.

How is Spinal Decompression Therapy Done?

During spinal compression therapy for lumbar areas, patients remain clothed and lie down comfortably on a motorized table. A harness is fixed on the hips and sometimes the neck and head for support. Using a computer-controlled system, the lower half of the table moves precisely to adjust traction levels. The spine is gently stretched, pulling on the vertebrae so the separation encourages the discs to retract and relieve pressure on compressed nerves.

As the disc space increases, it allows for the influx of essential nutrients, oxygen, and fluids, which aids in healing and strengthens the discs. This process not only alleviates pain but also promotes long-term recovery by improving spinal health.

How Long Does Spinal Decompression Therapy Last?

Spinal decompression therapy typically lasts between 15 to 20 minutes per session. The total duration of the treatment program can vary based on individual needs and the severity of the condition but generally spans several weeks. The overall treatment plan often ranges from 4 to 8 weeks, though some cases may require longer or shorter periods based on patient response and specific conditions.

Our Spinal Decompression Therapy at Osso Bone Care

The DOC Decompression table is imported from the USA and it’s one of just a few decompression tables that uses “Active Decompression” meaning, the table cushion and patient move together to accomplish the decompression stroke. Unlike the old mechanical weighted units of the past, where the belting systems applied pulling force to the patient, the system we use is computerized and will go up in small increments until the maximum setting is achieved. The same is used during release. You will barely notice the pull since the computer control is so efficient. Most patients even fall asleep during therapy.

The DOC Decompression Table is one of the few advanced decompression tables that provides targeted relief for both lumbar and cervical spine conditions, offering precise and effective treatment on both areas.

Depending on the condition, severity, and other individual factors, patients are positioned differently on the decompression table and assigned specific treatment programs. For conditions such as sciatica, where one-sided leg pain is present, patients may be positioned laterally, while conditions like scoliosis may require rotational positioning to target specific spinal curves.
